About Me

Black Lives Matter, All Cops Are Bastards, Trans Rights Are Human Rights, Land Back, Abortion Rights, This Machine Kills Fascists, and Labor Rights Are Written In Blood

I am a writer and lover of animals, ecology, world-building, stories, Pokemon, food, and napping. I am trans non-binary, autistic, Jewish, atheist, white, an ADHDer, a sufferer of chronic pain, and so super mega queer that I don't feel like diverging all of my various words that I use to describe myself and what they mean to me. The pronouns that I use are any of the following: they/them/theirs, zie/zir/zirs, and vi/vir/virs.

I love writing and reading books, though to be honest these days I read audiobooks far more than I read physical books. I like supporting my local library, and you should, too! I am currently in the process of becoming a self-published author. I have a couple of works ready to go, it's just a process and a half to get everything looking polished and professional. I started a small business for my self-publishing endeavors, called Bull & Dragon Press. It's just for me and my business partner (the "bull" in "Bull & Dragon") so that we can share resources. I will have a separate, much more professional looking website, for Bull & Dragon Press up in the coming months, but this website is my realm and where folks can find updates about my work.

I have a Bachelor of Science from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh in Biology (Ecology and Organismal Studies), Environmental Studies (Science), and English, with a minor in Creative Writing and the LGBTQ+ Studies Certificate. I spent the Fall of 2018 semester at the Frank Church–River of No Return Wilderness, an incredibly formative experience in my life where I lived at the Taylor Wilderness Research Station out of the University of Idaho. I had many incredible teachers, including the renowned Dr. Scott Slovic (only environmental writing people would recognize this name) as my Environmental Writing professor.

My Writing

I write a wide variety of genres: speculative fiction, environmental writing, creative non-fiction, essays, technical writing, and even fancy myself a poet. Some of you visiting this page may know me for my Pokemon fan work as Professor Redwood, from tumblr, as the owner of the Pokemonbiologyirlthetabletop blog [Pokemon Biology IRL the Tabletop].

I enjoy writing high fantasy the most, but Pokemon and poetry easily come in second. World-building is one of my favorite things of anything I read, no matter how subtle or expansive it may be. In my own works, I often utilize poetry and different degrees of world-building for varying effects.

Why Go Indie?

Like all writers, I dreamed of being seen by an agent and a publisher and having my work on the shelves of bookstores. Alas, I had the sense to spend several years steadily researching the publishing industry as I became a better writer and studied through my six years of undergrad school. This research taught me a lot of fundamental truths about the publishing industry, including and especially the fact that the things that I want to write are going to be considered either "too experimental" or "too diverse" or "too weird" or "too niche" to ever have a real fighting chance. Two of the works that I'm proudest of, LANTERN and my grant-funded senior thesis project THE EXISTENTIALIST DREAD OF A GEN Z'ER, are both far too experimental in media form to be worth considering by any agent or publishing house. And, the very crushing reality that even traditionally published authors have to spend huge amounts of time and their own money on marketing anyways, added to the sobering fact that if I want my writing to go out there into the world for others to read, then I would have to bite the bullet and do it myself. Establishing my own small business, Bull & Dragon Press, is the first step in all that.

    • Original Piece | I was not given any notice of what edits and changes would be made and the original publication of the article resulted in a heavily butchered version of what I wrote, and this got changed because I managed to bitch to the right person and the revised version (seen in the link) is what remains. I still am unhappy with it, but less so than I was. Since this is my website, I thought I'd include the original, fully unedited version that was submitted to the school newspaper. But as unhappy as I am with what got published, a lot of people read it and a lot of folks (including the chancellor) approached me in the weeks after telling me that they'd read my piece in the school newspaper and that they really liked it, so I begrudgingly accept the situation for what it is.
